Bouganvilla Tree - Answer to the heat on our roof?

I just started recording the Victory Garden on PBS.  I am not sure why I didn't start watching this show earlier, but at least this is better late than never.  Once again my love of Jamie Durie appears in the episode titled "Think Up".  He is inspired to create a metal tree that is filled with a bouganvilla vine.  It is so pretty!  And makes me think I could use a plant that is specific to Zone 5 to create more shade on our roof!  I wonder how you would winterize the plant if it is a creative container such as this?  Thoughts??
